our history

Where it all started

The founding member of Extreme Abilities was paralyzed in a motor vehicle accident in 2008 at the young age of 18 and at the age of 21 established a platform for disabled surfing through his own disability and love for surfing post his accident.

Dries Millard sat with various role players from the disability and surfing industries and came up with the idea to use surfing as a means for disabled people to escape the trap of everyday life stuck with a disability at home or zone of comfort. With the great success that adaptive surfing showcased and the many lives positively impacted the natural step after therapy was competition and in 2015 the world saw the first ever international surfing competition for disabled people. Dries Millard was the first disabled person that was an accredited ISA surfing instructor and was invited to speak as keynote speaker at this historical event that took place in La Jolla, California USA. It was in preparation for this inaugural world adaptive surfing championship that Dries embarked on a three month long surf road show, where he went from surf shop to surf shop, from life savers club to life savers club, from NSRI station to NSRI station, speaking on radio shows and in front on Schools of children all to create disability awareness and to raise funds to go overseas for the first time to surf for South Africa as a paralyzed surfer and to speak on an international stage for disability surfing.
